The JCR Committee

The JCR Committee are there to make sure that you all have the best University and College experience possible. With the exception of the JCR President they are all current students. Below you can find out about all of the positions and students currently in Office, you can run to be part of the JCR Committee in Epiphany (Second) Term.

Haf Serajee (they/them) - JCR President

Hello! I'm your JCR President this year, and I'm very excited to get to know you all! This is my second (and final) year as President, and I'm hoping to make it the best year South has had so far! I studied Psychology and I graduated in 2022, and I was elected to be JCR President for the upcoming year. When I started at Durham in 2019, I was in John Snow College and moved to South when it opened to help set things up. JCR President is a sabbatical role, meaning I now work full time for the JCR to ensure everything runs smoothly and you all have the best experience possible!

As President, it's my job to oversee everything that South JCR does! I work hand in hand with the JCR Executive Committee, who are all current students elected to fulfill specific roles related to the running of the JCR. If you want to find out more about them, their profiles are below!

But a quick dive into what the JCR does: we organise and run most events at South including Freshers week, Winter & Summer Balls, and South Day, we manage all of the college sports and societies, we provide student-led welfare support, and so much more. As part of my job I also sit as South's student representative, so I also work very closely with the College staff to help ensure your voices are heard, as well as working alongside the other JCR Presidents to represent you further to staff in the wider university!

South is a place that welcomes everyone and we always want to ensure we provide an experience that suits you and allows you the opportunity to get involved as much as you'd like, however that is! If you ever feel like there's anything missing, or anything we're not hitting the mark with, let us know, we want to do what's best for as many people as possible!! There are so many opportunities to get involved, whether you run for a position on the exec committee, set up a new society, or join our welfare team, we want to make sure there are as many opportunities as possible. If you ever need help with anything, I'm here to help!

We all can't wait to welcome you at South (whether you're joining us fresh in September, or you're a returner checking out the JCR website), and I hope you have an amazing year at South.

Amy Shuttleworth (she/her) - Vice President

Hi! I’m Amy (she/her) and I am your JCR Vice-President for this year! I am responsible for organising your formals, ordering stash so you can show your Southie spirit and helping out other members of the committee. Getting involved with college life is a key aspect within Durham so come along to a formal or two, join in during freshers week and have an explore! When I’m not in the JCR office I should be studying for a degree in Criminology or procrastinating by rowing with SCBC or working behind the college bar, the Nest. If you see me around, please say hi and feel free to ask me any questions you might have about South, Durham or general university life!

Tom Bever - Chair

Hi, I'm Tom, a 3rd year BSc Geography student and your JCR Chair for the year 2023/24. I’m very excited to hold the role and am committed to fostering a transparent and engaged JCR by sharing regular updates, hosting community surgeries, and maximising transparency. I aim to uphold the JCR's enduring dedication to our college community, placing your concerns at the forefront of our actions. My previous engagement in college life, from being JCR Outreach Officer, a Frep, Men’s Captain of the college boat club, and President and Founder of Compass Charity Fashion Show, well equips me for the role. I’m very excited to meet as many of you as possible over the coming academic year and continue to support South’s vibrant community.

Skyler Cheng (she/her) and Annabel Lavelle - Senior Welfare Officers

Hey guys, I’m Skyler (she/her), one of your Senior Welfare Officers for this year! I’m a third year Politics and International Relations student from Hong Kong. I joined JCR committee and WEDI committee as International Officer last year but ended up overworking on different aspects of college life (do not be me), but I’d love to continue serving the college community as Senior Welfare Officer! Outside of my studies and JCR duties, I enjoy creating, gaming, traveling, and talking extensively about Eurovision (and how Finland should have won Eurovision 2023). I’m always down for a cuppa and a chat about literally anything, so feel free to approach me :))

Hi I’m Annabel and I will be one of your Senior Welfare Officers next year! I am a third year Law student. I joined the WEDI committee as First Generation Scholar back in January and I’m excited to have greater responsibilities as an SWO next year! I’m currently obsessed with reading dystopian fiction, playing sims 4 and I will be keeping up with the WSL. You can probably find me in one of Durham’s many brunch spots or the cat cafe (in my opinion the BEST place in Durham). Feel free to reach out, I’m always happy to have a chat.

Kenneth Kwok - Treasurer

Hi Southies, I am Kenneth, a third year Natural Sciences student and I am your JCR treasurer this year. You probably won’t see me much in person since my duty is pretty much always behind the stage. I am responsible for managing the South JCR bank account, as well as sorting out and keeping track of income and expenditures of the JCR. I will be working closely with the JCR execs, as well as Sports and Societies Presidents and various of Committees making sure money arrives to the correct hands quickly and being spent wisely. I hope we have a smooth year ahead providing all Southies with the best of South JCR.

Adeline Cheung (she/her)- International Officer

Nei5 Hou2 (that means “hi” in Cantonese!) I’m Adeline (she/her), this year’s International Officer and a second year Marketing and Management student. I’m originally from Hong Kong but recently moved to East Sussex. I’ll be in charge of every international bit related to South, e.g. hosting international fests/ events at the Nest and making sure no matter where you are from or which culture you were being brought up in, your voice is heard. You can either see me holding my iPad wherever I go (cuz I’d cry not having my / planner with me 24/7) or hear me talking in three languages all of a sudden. I'm also a self-proclaimed expert in Canva slash crazy multi-task workholic slash hopeless romantic (it's an all-in-one package). Can’t wait to see y’all at South soon and make South the best international college in Durham. Absolutely down for a coffee chat if you ever want to chat about anything x

Josh Loan-Clarke - Charities and Outreach Officer

Hi – my name is Josh and I’m the Charities, Volunteering and Outreach Officer. My role is to run events which benefit and connect three main groups: ourselves at South; our local community in Durham; and our global community, especially the global South. Look out for opportunities throughout the year, and if you have cool ideas or want to get involved let me know at south.jcroutreach@durham.ac.uk. Outside of this, you’ll find me either studying some combination of Physics, Philosophy, Maths or Computer Science, (Natural Science flexibility is a beautiful thing), or playing Dodgeball/Frisbee/Football, or (most importantly) playing proudly in our 18 esteemed Kazoo Society. Hope you’re enjoying Freshers :-)

Georgia Butler - Sports Officer

Hey, my name is Georgia and I am so excited to be the Sports Officer for South College this academic year! I am currently a third year Geophysicist and have been in a variety of sports teams during my time at Durham, including the Netball A Team, Rounders and being the President of Squash. Sports teams are an incredible way to make new friends, and I can’t wait to help everyone get involved. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me and I’d be happy to help: @southsportsandsocs.

Aisling Skeet (she/they) - Societies Officer

Hi! I'm Aisling, and I'll be your Societies Officer for the upcoming year! As the newest college in Durham, South doesn't have the long history other college societies have built up, but that just means there's loads of space right for the taking! Alongside our fantastic groups already running (shout-out to Kazoo Soc and South Readers), I want people to feel free to create spaces where they can engage in their passions with like-minded Southies. You can find me in the Nest or quizzing most nights, or contact me at south.jcrsocieties@durham.ac.uk if you have any questions or ideas - no society is too strange, if you're passionate about it, go for it!

Amanda Perez (she/her) - Winter Ball Chair

Hi everyone! My name is Amanda, and I’m so excited to be your Winter Ball Chair for next year! I’m currently a second year doing law, and I’m from the U.S. I’m involved in college hockey and rounders, which have both been so fun. I’m also the Finance Officer of Law Society and am Laidlaw’s treasurer. In my free time, I love to learn languages, specifically French and German, and I actually lived in Munich for a year! I also love to read books, catch up on the news, and hang out with my friends. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about what I’m involved in, my experience at Durham in specific things (I’m a member of both DPOCA and the International Students Association too), or just to chat!

Charlie Edwards (he/him) - Bar Steward

Hey, I'm Charlie (he/him) and I'm a third year psychology student. I love being outdoors, so you'll often find me walking down a random footpath in the middle of nowhere! As your bar steward next year, I'm looking forward to creating opportunities for you to meet new people both inside and out of college. I want the Nest to be a space that reflects what south students want it to be so please give me feedback on how you find it!

Em Clarke (they/them) - Bar Events Officer

I’m Em, and I’ll be your Bar Events Officer for this year! I’m a second year student of Japanese, and when I’m not frantically trying to memorise vocab I can be found listening to anything loud and making a fool of myself at the Karaoke. As BEO, it’s my responsibility to look after events going on in the Nest - planning the calendar, organising fun and interesting things for Southies to do, and acting as a liason/oversight for societies who want to hold their events in the Nest. I want to have a good range of events, with something on as often as possible, listening to what Southies want and running bigger events when the occasion arises. I want the Nest to be a place Southies want to be - for events, pres, the whole night, a quick mid revision pint, and any other time. I hope to see all of you in the Nest this year - its you Southies who make these events incredible.

Liv Gilmour (she/her) - Events Officer

Hi! I’m Liv and I’m your JCR events officer! I’m a 3rd year Marketing and Management student and former South Welfare campaigns rep. I really want to make events as fun and accessible as possible, and I would like to hear Southie ideas on what you want to see, so if there’s an event you’d love to be put on in college, let me know!

Amy Talbot (she/her) - Promotions and Communications Officer

Hi Southies!! I’m Amy (she/her) and I’m heading into my third year of studying English Literature and History. Besides attempting to get through my ever-growing reading list I enjoy drinking coffee, listening to country music, drawing and doing spin classes! I’m very excited about working on the JCR this year as Proms and Comms Officer. What this means is that I’ll be behind most of the social media posts and emails that will keep you up to date with what’s going on at South. If you have anything you’d like to share or ask about please do get in contact by emailing south.jcrcomms@durham.ac.uk.

Rupert Walker (he/him) - Head Frep

My name is Rupert, my pronouns are he/him, and I am a third year studying Theology and Religion. In my spare time(!) I row for College, and sing and beatbox for DU Northern Lights (shameless plug!). I also love anything outdoorsy if I ever have the time for it, and can often be found daydreaming about a nice mug of Yorkshire Tea. I am the Head FREP this year and my role is really rather nice as the vast majority of it is complete by the end of Fresher’s week. My job is primarily to organise Prep Week and Fresher’s Week, with a focus on external events, while serving as a point of contact between FREPs and the JCR. For the rest of the year, I will be organising occasional FREP socials to keep us all sane as summatives kick in! I’m really excited to see what this year will bring.

Kyle Lu - Gym Manager

Hi, I’m Kyle and I’m the gym manager for the upcoming year. Please don’t hesitate to ask me any questions you have regarding our gym or anything related. I love powerlifting alongside several other hobbies such as scuba diving so feel free to stop me for a chat.
